The South Wales Valleys are an area of South Wales, UK. The area includes the county boroughs of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Torfaen. The valleys are bordered to the west by the counties of Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend County; to the north by the Mid-Wales county of Powys; to the east by the counties of Newport and Monmouthshire; and to the south by the City of Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. As the name suggests the main geographical features of the counties are the north south valleys that generally run parallel to each other from the heads of the valleys road towards the Vale of Glamorgan and the South Wales coast. The valleys were traditionally industrial areas but with the closing of the coal mines they have received considerable investment in an attempt to restore them to their original glories. The valleys are now being marketed for their industrial heritage and indeed as tourist attractions. The principal towns and villages are Tylorstown, Ynyshir, Cwm Clydach, Llwynypia, Pentre, Penygraig, Porth, Tonypandy, Treherbert, Treorchy, Ystrad, Torfaen, Blaenavon, Cwmbran, Griffithstown, New Inn, Pontypool, Abersychan, Abertillery, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale, Tredegar, Llanhilleth, Aberbargoed, Abercarn, Bargoed, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Crumlin, Cwmcarn, Gelligaer, Hengoed, Newbridge, Caerphilly, Rhymney, Risca, Senghenydd, Wyllie, Abercanaid, Pentrebach, Georgetown, Pengarnddu, Gurnos, Aberfan, Edwardsville and Maerdy.
