Monmouthshire and Newport are counties in the south east of Wales, UK. The counties are bordered to the north by both Powys and the English county of Herefordshire, to the east by the English county of Gloucestershire, to the south by the Severn Estuary, and to the west by the City of Cardiff and the South Wales Valleys. The county of Monmouthshire has an area of 328 square miles (850kmē) and has a population of 88,200. The county borough of Newport has an area of 73 square miles (190kmē) and has a population of 140,100. The chief geographical features of the county are: Black Mountains in the north ; the rural valleys of the Wye and the Usk ; the River Usk and the River Wye. The principal towns are to be found evenly spread throughout the county of Monmouthshire and include Abergavenny, Llanthony, Monmouth, Raglan, Usk, Tintern, Chepstow, and Caldicot. The county borough of Newport is also Wales' third most populous city and until the boundary changes was the largest town in the old county of Monmouthshire. The housing stock of Monmouthshire and Newport ranges from the traditional cottages in the Monmouth countryside to suburban districts and modern housing estates in the larger towns and the City of Newport. Being so close to the English border it is not surprising that the Welsh language is spoken by only 9.3% of the population Monmouthshire and Newport.
