Flintshire is a county in the north east of Wales, UK. The county is bordered to the west by the county of Denbighshire, to the south by the county of Wrexham and to the east by the English county of Cheshire. The Irish Sea and the Dee estuary border the north and north east of the county respectively. The county has an area of 169 square miles (438 kmē) and has a population of 150,500. The main geographical features of the county are: the rolling hills of the Clwyd range to the west, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty ; the estuary of the River Dee to the east where migrating birds over-winter on a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Unlike many Welsh counties the county of Flintshire has a large manufacturing base, with industries including Airbus, Toyota, Corus Steelworks and Shotton paper mills. This is reflected in the locations of the large towns in the east of the county and on the estuary/coastal fringe (Flint, Holywell, Shotton, Queensferry...).But Flintshire is a diverse county with the industrial areas being primarily confined to the east of the county. Away from the coastal strip the county has a typical Welsh rural feel and the property stock ranges from Welsh country cottages in the market towns and villages in the heart of Flintshire (Nannerch, Northop, Hawarden, Cilcain, Halkyn, Llanasa, Whitford...) to the terraced and semi detached houses of the larger towns. Being close to the English border it is not surprising that Flintshire has fewer Welsh speakers than many other Welsh counties and according to the 2001 Census, 14.1% of the population of Flintshire were recorded as Welsh-speaking.
