Carmarthenshire is a county in the south west of Wales, UK. The county is bordered to the west by the county of Pembrokeshire, to tne north by the county of Ceredigion, to the east by the county of Powys and Neath Port Talbot and to the south by both the Bristol Channel and the county of Swansea. The county has an area of 924.7 square miles (2,395 kmē) and has a population of 179,500. Geographically Carmarthenshire is a diverse county with the Cambrian Mountains in the north, the Brecon Beacons National Park in the west and the wide stretches of beaches at Pendine and Pembrey in the south of the county. The most populated areas and indeed the principal towns are to be found in the south of the county including Ammanford, Burry Port, Kidwelly, Llanelli, St. Clears, Whitland and Pendine. Carmarthen, however, is the county town due to its more central situation and the towns of Llandeilo, Newcastle Emlyn, and Llandovery help to populate the more rural northern area of the county. The housing stock of Carmarthenshire ranges from traditional country cottages under slated roofs in the rural districts to the terraced houses and town houses of the once heavily industrialised areas of the south west of the county. As with many other Welsh counties the Welsh language is more widely used in the more rural parts of the county and according to the 2001 Census 50.3% of the population are Welsh-speaking.
